Planting Instructions

Large trees being planted in clay soils should be planted 2-4" above the existing grade to prevent pooling of water in the roots. Do not dig the hole any deeper than the dimensions given.

BALL AND BURLAP

  • This must be planted just as you receive it; burlap, rope, and wire too! Fill in around the ball with 2/3 of your existing soil, and mixed 1/3 compost plus soil.  Water well.

FIBER POT

  • We cannot overstress the importance of LEAVING THE POT ON!!!!! These pots are made of paper and will rot away. They are easily penetrated by the roots. Break off the pots rim to the level of soil. Dig your hole no deeper than the pot's height. Fill in around the pot with compost plus mixed with existing soil. Water well.

PLASTIC POTS

  • Water thoroughly and remove from pot. The roots have been confined by the pot and should be loosened by gently tugging the root mass.

WATERING AND AFTERCARE

  • Water plants well after planting. Water approximately once per week thereafter, depending on the weather. Use bonemeal after the specimen is planted. Fertilizing can be done every six weeks beginning in May through the second week in July. Do not fertilize any later than this! In the fall be sure to water evergreens well before freezing weather. Cover the root ball with 1-1/2" of mulch. If the plant is young and deciduous make sure to cover the trunk with a plastic  wrap. This will prevent the rodents from eating the bark. Remove the plastic wrap in the Spring.
